ICD-10 Corner: No Time to Delay ICD-10 Preparations

By Sarah Serling, CPC, CPC-H, CPC-I, CCS-P, CCS, ICD-10-CM/PCS Trainer

If providers do not have ICD-10 fully implemented by the October 1, 2014 compliance date for the ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS code sets, it will affect claims payment for services that would have been covered had the correct codes been used. On the other hand, providers who have fully implemented ICD-10, should see an improved claims adjudication process and fewer issues with incorrectly paid claims. In addition, the more specific data collected on diseases, disorders, and other conditions, thanks to the greater specificity of ICD-10 codes, will positively impact research, disease management, and other factors affecting the quality of health care in the United States.
